Banda Batua (A Guide to Safety at Sea in Emergencies) is a short visual book that contains various information that is essential for survival at sea. The word batua is taken from the Banda native language which means to fish.

This book is designed to resemble an emergency book that we usually get on aeroplanes. The red-bound book contains information on items that must be carried when at sea, food that can be eaten in an emergency situation, pictures of objects that can be used to float when the ship sinks, how to make clean drinking water using solar-based desanitation techniques, and several objects that can be used to get help in an emergency situation.

In addition to these safety practice guides, the book also contains a recipe for ginger candy that can be made and consumed to avoid seasickness. On the last page of the book, there is also a word search game that fishermen can play when they are bored at sea.

This work is supported by Dana SAM as part of Karya Normal Baru / New Normal Work 2020 open call, organised by Jakarta Biennale, Biennale Jogja, and Makassar Biennnale.

Banda Batua was selected by Makassar Biennale.
