Built in the late eighties, RJJ Building was once an art supply and stationery shop before it became a clothing shop. About a decade ago, the building was temporarily suspended from public use and it became a storage facility. For now, as part of the Thailand Biennale — Chiang Rai 2023, Rubanah Underground Hub using the space along with its relics and the potential memories that they carry. Rubanah is walking alongside, amongst, and even under objects that are indeed stored in this building.
Twenty-four works are present and arranged in felicitations and with respect to preexisting conditions of the space, the objects, and of those who might have spent some time with them. Most of the works are suspended from the ceiling, displayed inside the room, not on its edges nor peripheries where they’d be viewed in isolation. Such a display indeed intends to build up an experience of seeing the works in relation to each other, be it facing, across, back to back, and so on. Rubanah wants the space, along with the material leftovers in it, to frame your gaze upon the works.
The show is curated by Akmalia Rizqita “Chita” & Grace Samboh. Featuring works by Cecil Mariani, Handiwirman Saputra, Immartyas, Jalanpulang, Kokok P. Sancoko, M. Irfan, Nunung W.S., Pius Sigit Kuncoro and Yuli Prayitno.
