Marten Bayuaji at Aranya Art Center Winter Recidency Program

Marten Bayuaji have completed a one-month residency at Jinshanling in March 2025. Drawing inspiration from Chinese characters and his experience hiking through the mountains, he created a group of works during his stay. “In every climb I do, there are two things that are contradictory and compete with each other in my body. A dualism in the mental state that is turbulent and feels like arrhythmia. They are ‘fear (怵)’ and ‘desire(慾)’. There is a condition that forces me to fulfill the desire to conquer the mountain. But there is also a condition that forces me to be afraid of risks and disasters. These two things try to control each other throughout my climbing steps. This phenomenon is very interesting, at the most balanced point between the two I can determine when I should continue or stop my steps (…) In the presence of the nature, desire is on my right, fear is on my left, and I walk between both of them.”
